The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya, 1830-1980

a Challenge to Modernization Theory
While most states of the Middle East region have pursued policies that more or less approached the prescriptions of the Modernization type meta-theories, there has been the general perception, from within and without, that the region as a whole has failed to live up to the promise of social and economic welfare that modern development was supposed to generate. The political advancement of the Region toward more pluralistic or democratic forms of government that was supposed to proceed as the inevitable result of economic and industrial transformation has been even more disappointing and lagged far below material achievements. In The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya 1830-1980 Lisa Anderson has rejected the mainstream meta-theoretical approaches to the study of the nature of development in the Middle East. Through a process of historical analysis of the socio-economic mechanisms that have characterized the nature of Libya and Tunisia's different paths of social and political transformation, Anderson has emphasized the study of state formation processes and the particular nature of a peripheral's state integration in the world capitalist system.Anderson has challenged both of the principal development meta-theories that became popular in the decades after WWII. She has contested Modernization theory's interpretation of development moving in a linear pattern through predictable stages to inevitably culminate in the establishment of a democratic capitalist state modeled on the pattern of the West. She has noted that development is not achieved without cost and that social conflict is a necessary outcome as the State balances its monopoly of authority as it coerces and encourages different social and economic actors to achieve a relative degree of stability and equity. In order to achieve this and promote a real degree of social transformation an efficient bureaucracy and public administration are crucial. Accordingly, her study has shown the contrasting development patterns of Libya and Tunisia. In the former, Anderson has stressed the persistence of kinship based societal relations and null bureaucratic development during the period of Italian colonization and the perpetuation of this pattern after independence. Oil rents made it possible for the Libyan administration to rely almost exclusively on its distributive capacity to prevent the establishment of efficient institutional and bureaucratic machinery; consequently, society and political development have not progressed toward the formation of a modern state in the Weberian sense.

Great Companion/Workbook
This is a great study guide and workbook for those who are excelling in the difficult subject of statistics.

The authors present each method in a clear and concise manner and offer groupings of work problems that keep you progressing to the point that you will feel at ease with each chapter.

The text is a wonderful guide in itself, but combined with the companion book there is no problem that cannot be overcome.

A Stone in Heaven

Dominic Flandry rides again
In "A Stone in Heaven," Dominic Flandry finds friendship, maybe even love, after many years of being totally alone.

After "A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows," Flandry's life stood in ruins. His Emperor, unbeknownst to him at the time, was dead; his sons were incompetent. His love was dead; his son was dead; he didn't believe in his job any longer, and he'd taken out his biggest adversary.

So, what was left? This book shows the answer: plenty.

The younger son of Hans Molitor now holds the throne in his incompetent grasp, and worse, does not like Flandry. So, although Flandry is now a Vice-Admiral and commands much respect, he isn't thrown too many assignments. OTOH, he is able to make his own schedule, so when Miriam Abrams, daughter of mentor Max Abrams (his superior in "Ensign Flandry"), manages to get to him to point out a major problem on Ramnau, he leaves.

Once again, he finds intrigue and lots of it, problems, and pain. But unlike "A Knight of Ghost and Shadows," Flandry this time finds more while he's solving the mystery. He and Abrams reach an understanding, and more or less pair off by the end of the book. He also helps solve her problem, take out a would-be Emperor candidate, and rehabilitate his image with Emperor Gerhardt (the younger son of Hans Molitor) in the process, so it's definitely not a wasted trip.

Along the way, we see an older, almost used-up Chives, still serving Flandry as best he can . . . it's heartbreaking, really, although also encouraging. And Flandry's still hanging in there, despite the loss of his love, his son, and most of his reason for living fifteen-plus years before, which is also a very good thing.

Btw, I was really astonished to find out this book is out of print, when "A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows" is not. Let's hope someone pays Anderson's widow for the rights to this excellent book, so people unfamiliar with Anderson will be able to read it for themselves.

Five stars plus, and highly recommended.

Stories from the Nerve Bible
Published in Paperback by Harperperennial Library (May, 1994)
Author: Laurie Anderson
Average review score:

And Everything It Says Is True.
This book is the definitive companion. Laurie's work can often resemble a slowly realized puzzle. You flip a few pieces over, notice this one resembles that one, while at the same time appreciating each piece for itself. Reading this book is like seeing the box the puzzle came in. It's not quite cheating; it sheds new light on each individual piece and inspires a new appreciation. Balanced with nearly an equal amount of pictures and text, it is accessible as a coffee table book and essential for a Laurie Anderson fan, examining her work as a sculptor and early experiments before United States I-IV. Perhaps the most memorable bit in this volume is reading in print that all the stories within are true.

Stories from the Nerve Bible: A Twenty-Year Retrospective
Published in Paperback by Harperperennial Library (March, 1994)
Author: Laurie Anderson
Average review score:

This is the time, and this is the record of the time.
This inspiring retrospective covers a twenty-year period from her "Institutional Dream Series" in 1972, where she would sleep in various public places (a library restroom, a night courtroom, a seaport) to see how it affected her dreams, up to her live shows of "Stories from the Nerve Bible" in 1992. While the material is generally presented in a linear fashion, images and texts from different stages of her career are juxtaposed to underline the many recurring themes in her work (dreams, speech, time, technology). Various entertaining stories, observations and anecdotes are interspersed with stage directions and song lyrics. There's an annotated chronology at the end to help keep things straight. Anderson's performances have often utilized the violin, and her numerous modified versions of it are explored (the Tape Bow Violin, the Self-Playing Violin, the digital violin, the neon violin, the Viophonograph). Many of her other innovations are also touched upon, including her projects with the pillow speaker, the Handphone Table, the Acoustic Lens, the video clone, and the body drum-suit. Filled with countless photos and stills from her installations and presentations, this book will grab your interest whether you read it cover to cover or just open it up at random. It's a magnificent look at the "performance artist," and essential for fans of her work.

"Stories of Power and Purpose" by Leland E. Anderson
Mr. Anderson has written a somewhat brief, though powerful book. His stories are all true and are very inspirational. He shows us how to use the power of God in our lives. His book is along the lines of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," althought Mr. Anderson wrote his book about 20 years ago, and it's better than the "Chicken Soup" series. Although "Stories of Power and Purpose" is now out of print, it is available for a very decent price from some used book sellers on this site. Take a chance and buy it! You won't be sorry. I really treasure my copy of this book.
